1. Swiftbroom Academy

Swiftbroom Academy

Map Description

Swiftbroom Academy is reminiscent of Hogwarts, a place where young wizards once trained. The academy is now abandoned, with only monsters and valuable artifacts remaining. The map features lecture halls, dormitories, classrooms, and even a dungeon, giving players plenty of areas to explore.

The walls are decorated with portraits of wizards who likely served as faculty. Wizard robes hang in nearly every room, and cauldrons filled with boiling acid can be found throughout the academy. These acid cauldrons can be used strategically to launch yourself into the air or eliminate threats.

Key Features

  • Lecture Halls: Large open spaces with rows of seating. Often contain valuable items at the front.
  • Dormitories: Small rooms with beds and personal items. Check drawers and closets for loot.
  • Dungeons: Dark, maze-like areas with higher-value items but also more dangerous monsters.
  • Acid Cauldrons: Can be used for vertical movement or as weapons against enemies.

Notable Items

Swiftbroom Academy contains magical artifacts that can fetch a high price. Here are some of the most valuable items:

  • Magic Laser Wand: Worth $21,200, but extremely volatile. Handle with care as it can fire destructive lasers if mishandled.
  • Speed Demon Broom: Valued at $11,000-$12,000. Keep the box intact to prevent it from flying away.
  • Gryphon Statue: The most valuable item at $34,800-$40,000. Very heavy, requiring strength upgrades to transport effectively.
  • Hourglass: Worth $5,600-$6,300. Slows down time when carried.

Pro Tip

When handling the Magic Laser Wand, always grab it by the handle, never the crystal tip. The slightest bump against a wall can trigger its laser beam, potentially wiping out your team and all the loot you've collected.

2. Disposal Arena

Disposal Arena

Map Description

The Disposal Arena serves as the "GAME OVER" location in R.E.P.O. Players are sent here when all team members are eliminated in a mission. Unlike other maps, this arena is specifically designed for player-versus-player combat.

Upon arrival, the floor beneath players opens, dropping them into a circular arena. Here, they must fight to the death to determine who will claim the coveted "Legendary Crown." The arena is littered with various items that can be used as weapons to knock opponents off the platform and into the abyss below.

Key Mechanics

  • Shrinking Arena: Every 30 seconds, the outermost ring of the arena falls away, reducing the playable area.
  • Last Man Standing: The sole survivor gets to claim the crown from the center of the arena.
  • Persistent Reward: The crown remains on the winner's character until another player wins it in a future arena match.

Strategy Guide

Initial Landing

When first dropped into the arena, your character automatically enters the "hide" state and bounces upon landing. While it's unlikely you'll be thrown off immediately, it's not impossible, so be prepared.

Weapon Selection

Your first priority should be finding a weapon. The most effective options include:

  • Baseball Bat: Even a slight hit can send opponents flying into the pit. Be careful not to hit yourself.
  • Gun: Not recommended due to poor accuracy, but can serve as a distraction for inexperienced players.

Advanced Tactics

  • If another player enters their hiding state, you may be able to pick them up and throw them to their doom.
  • Use large objects as cover by positioning yourself on the opposite side from the pit.
  • As the arena shrinks, move toward the center while maintaining awareness of your surroundings.

3. McJannek Station

McJannek Station

Map Description

McJannek Station is an abandoned Arctic research facility located in a snow-covered landscape. The research team has mysteriously vanished (or perhaps met a more sinister fate), leaving behind valuable equipment and research materials.

The station features large corridors, computer stations, storage rooms filled with supplies, and break rooms with vending machines. Bathrooms are scattered throughout the facility, a practical necessity given the harsh external environment.

In higher difficulty levels, players will encounter additional hazards including large water pools and extraction rooms with precarious single-plank walkways. Some areas feature narrow winding vents that players must carefully navigate.

Unique Features

One particularly intriguing room appears to blend elements from Headman Manor with the arctic theme. Amid snow coming through the cracks, you'll find a bed, bookcase, and cupboard similar to those in the Manor. This suggests a possible connection between the locations, adding to the game's lore.

Valuable Items

McJannek Station houses numerous valuable items, including:

  • Computer Tower: The most valuable item, worth $25,000-$30,000. Requires significant strength upgrades to transport effectively.
  • Large Computer Station: Valued at $17,610-$21,000. The screen displays images of fossilized creatures.
  • Large Fossilized Skeleton: Worth $12,000-$15,000. Raises questions about who this person was and how they became fossilized.
  • Flamethrower Cart/Propane Tank: Valuable items that can also serve as weapons against monsters.

Tactical Insight

Several items at McJannek Station can double as defensive tools. The Circular Ice Saw, Propane Tank, and Flamethrower Cart can all be used against monsters. Just be careful with the Propane Tank - make sure the nozzle is pointing away from you when you activate it by hitting it against a wall or floor.

4. Headman Manor

Headman Manor

Map Description

Of the three main mission maps, Headman Manor is undoubtedly the creepiest. It was the first map designed by the developers, dating back to when R.E.P.O was initially conceived as a single-player horror game. The manor takes its name from the Headman monster, as the house originally belonged to him.

The manor is characterized by narrow, maze-like hallways and small rooms with multiple connecting doors, creating a disorienting environment. The lighting is deliberately dark and eerie, enhancing the horror atmosphere. Many rooms and hallways are filled with hanging cobwebs, though thankfully no spiders.

In higher difficulty levels (typically level five or six and beyond), you'll encounter rooms with bottomless pits that can occupy most of the available floor space, making navigation treacherous.

Easter Egg

There's an interesting easter egg hidden in the manor's cemetery (when it spawns). One of the headstones features the Headman's face, suggesting that not only is this his house, but he's also buried here. This implies that the Headman monster is actually a ghost, adding an extra layer to the game's lore.

Valuable Items

The manor contains various valuables typical of an 80s mansion:

  • Piano: Highly valuable but extremely heavy and difficult to transport.
  • Possessed Doll: Worth $5,700-$7,200. Screams and thrashes when picked up, potentially stunning the carrier.
  • Music Box: Valued at $2,993-$3,700. When picked up, it opens and forces the player to turn with the dancing figures inside.
  • Ship in a Bottle: A simpler item worth $3,500-$4,000, with no special properties.

Warning

When handling the Possessed Doll, keep it as far from yourself as possible. If it gets too close, it will stun you, causing you to drop it. This can damage both you and the doll, reducing its value. Hold it at arm's length until you can place it in the cart or at the extraction point.

5. Service Station

Service Station

Map Description

Unlike the other maps, the Service Station isn't a mission location but rather a hub where players can purchase various items between missions. This abandoned gas station has a danger level of zero, making it a safe space to prepare for upcoming challenges.

Available Purchases

The Service Station offers a wide variety of items for purchase, including:

Health Items

  • Small Health Pack: $3,000-$6,000, restores 25 HP
  • Medium Health Pack: $5,000-$11,000, restores 50 HP
  • Large Health Pack: $7,000-$15,000, restores 100 HP

Upgrades

  • Strength Upgrade: Increases carrying capacity and move speed with heavy objects
  • Speed Upgrade: Improves movement speed
  • Jump Upgrade: Enhances jump height and distance
  • Health Upgrade: Increases maximum health

Weapons and Gear

  • Radar: Helps locate valuable items
  • Drone: Carries items for you
  • Shocker: Stuns monsters temporarily
  • Various grenades and traps: Useful for defense against monsters

Secret Room

The Service Station contains a secret room that always appears, though its location may vary. To find it, look for a tile that can be lifted near the purchase station, typically on the side where the medkits are displayed.

Accessing this room can be challenging in single-player mode without a jump upgrade. Alternatively, you can use shockwave mines, shockwave grenades, or other equipment like zero gravity orbs combined with jumps to reach it.

The secret room may contain special items like Human Grenades or Duct Tape Grenades. You might also encounter "Stow away" (Larry), an NPC hiding in this location.

Shopping Strategy

For optimal progression, prioritize purchasing strength and health upgrades early in your playthrough. Strength upgrades allow you to carry heavier, more valuable items, significantly increasing your earnings per mission. Health upgrades improve your survival chances, ensuring you can extract with your loot.

Conclusion

Each map in R.E.P.O offers a unique experience, from the magical academy halls of Swiftbroom to the haunted corridors of Headman Manor. Understanding the distinct features, valuable items, and dangers of each location is crucial to maximizing your success in the game.

As you progress to higher difficulty levels, all maps become more challenging with additional hazards like bottomless pits, narrow walkways, and more aggressive monsters. Prepare accordingly by purchasing appropriate upgrades and equipment at the Service Station between missions.

Remember, the key to success in R.E.P.O is adaptability. Each map requires different strategies, and sometimes the most valuable items are the most difficult to extract. Work with your team, utilize the unique features of each environment, and soon you'll be mastering every map the game has to offer.
